COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has renewed a threat to stop writing checks on signed investment contracts, saying if he's not comfortable knowing what's in a contract, he won't send the money.

Loftis told reporters Thursday whether he cuts checks will depend on his level of comfort. But he added later that's nowhere near happening.

The comments came after the Retirement System Investment Commission refused to remove Reynolds Williams as chairman of the board that invests public workers' pension money. Loftis' motion failed 3-3.

Loftis asked the state attorney general July 3 to investigate allegations that Williams benefited from a commission investment. The attorney general's office forwarded the complaint to the State Law Enforcement Division and the State Ethics Commission.

Reynolds says he did nothing wrong.
