COLUMBIA, S.C.(WACH)--Richland County council members voted to put a penny sales tax on the November ballot.
The penny tax proposal has been an ongoing topic of discussion.
Council members reached an agreement Wednesday that officially puts the referendum on the November ballot.
The current ordinance would allocate 29% of the penny sales tax to the CMRTA bus transit system.
Bob Liming, Chairman of Save our Buses Task Force is one of many that argue that the nearly 14 million dollars a year isn't enough to save the buses.
"It's disappointing, we need a system that can better serve our area," said Liming. "We are far from there yet."
Most agree that the bus system needs more funding to operate efficiently, but disagree on where the money should come from.
63% of the penny sales tax will go to roadways, 29% will go to the buses, and the remaining 8% will fund the bike paths and greenways.
Richland County residents will have a chance to vote on the proposal in the upcoming November election.
