Lexington VFW hosts Fourth of July fundraiser for families of fallen soldiers

The Lexington Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 8738 is hosting a barbeque lunch Wednesday to raise money for the families of fallen South Carolina Army Guardsmen 1st Lt. Ryan Rawl and Sgt. John Meador.

LEXINGTON, SC (WACH) - The Lexington Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 8738 hosted a barbeque lunch Wednesday to raise money for the families of fallen South Carolina Army Guardsmen 1st Lt. Ryan Rawl and Sgt. John Meador.

Music, drinks, barbeque and fireworks were on the menu.

Officials invited the community to come celebrate freedom this Fourth of July by showing support for the men that made the ultimate sacrifice protecting it.

For those who cannot attend the, donations can also be made to the fund set up for Rawl and Meadeor at First Citizens Bank. All proceeds from the benefit will go to the fund.

The South Carolina National Guard said 1st Lt. Ryan Rawl of Lexington, Sgt. First Class Matthew Thomas of Easley and Sgt. John Meador of Columbia were killed Wednesday, June 20 by a suicide bomber in Khowst City, Khowst Province, Afghanistan. Five other South Carolina National Guard soldiers were also wounded in the attack. Sgt. Meador was posthumously promoted to sergeant.

The soldiers were assigned to the 133rd Military Police Company, headquartered in Timmonsville.

Their memorial services were held last weekend.
