COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- State lawmakers are behind closed doors to consider whether South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley illegally lobbied while a member of the House.
The House Ethics Committee immediately voted Friday to go into executive session to discuss testimony gathered from 11 witnesses, including the governor. The committee consists of five Republicans and one Democrat.
The first-term Republican governor told the panel Thursday she did nothing wrong in her previous jobs as a fundraiser for Lexington Medical Center's nonprofit and a consultant for engineering firm Wilbur Smith Associates.
Those assertions were backed up by other witnesses that included Haley's former bosses.
The GOP activist who brought the charges against her was subpoenaed but never called to testify. Former Board of Economic Advisors Chairman John Rainey was sequestered throughout the 12-hour hearing.
