MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say it's unclear whether neighborhood dogs were responsible for the mauling death of a 2-year-old in Mount Pleasant last weekend.

They are considering whether the boy might have been attacked by a wild animal.

Authorities have said that 2-year-old Ja'Marr Tiller slipped out a back door Sunday evening and was attacked. The child's grandmother said he was mauled by some stray dogs that the boy's uncle had been feeding for years.

But investigators now say there is no solid evidence that the lab-shepherd mixes were involved. Family members say the dogs never bared their teeth and were afraid of people.

Investigators are considering whether a wild animal, perhaps a coyote, might have been involved.
