CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A rare book almost 270 years old and found in a library vault in Charleston is being returned to its rightful owners.

The Charleston Library Society returns the book to representatives of the College of Charleston on Thursday.

The book was published in London in 1743, and was part of the 800-volume library that planter and diplomat John Mackenzie donated to the College of Charleston back in the 1700s.

The collection was stored at the Charleston Library Society until the college could build its library. Then a 1778 fire destroyed many of the Library Society's books.

The Mackenzie volume was recently discovered during a multi-year cataloguing of the volumes in the Library Society vaults.
