COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A federal lawsuit has been filed over a South Carolina Supreme Court decision that officials say could keep hundreds of candidates from appearing on ballots for the state's June 12 primaries.
State Senate candidate Amanda Somers on Friday asked a federal judge to delay a noon deadline so that she can be heard in court.
Somers is running as a Republican to replace retiring Greer Republican Phillip Shoopman. Her attorney says Somers' candidacy is uncertain after the state Supreme Court ruled this week that financial and candidate intent paperwork must be filed at the same time.
Officials have estimated more than 100 candidates in at least 30 counties would be affected. State political parties have until noon to submit corrected candidate lists to election officials.
