COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's Democrats and Republicans want clarification of a court ruling they fear might mean most candidates challenging incumbents across the state would be kept off ballots for the June primary.

Both parties and the State Election Commission on Thursday asked the state Supreme Court to rehear a case over the filing of financial paperwork. They say candidates filed those papers according to the commission's interpretation of the law.

On Wednesday, the court ruled dozens of candidates should be removed from ballots because of improperly filed paperwork. The justices acknowledged their ruling would be hard for some but said state law on the matter is clear.

State officials have estimated more than 100 candidates would be affected. Now, both parties say that number could be much higher.
