COLUMBIA (WACH) - Have you ever wondered what it was like to be inside Van Gogh's Chambre? Or how fragrant it may have been in Monet's garden? If so, the Columbia Open Studios Tour this weekend might be right up your artistic alley. The 701 Center for Contemporary Art in conjunction with The Indie Grits Festival is presenting a rare glimpse inside the working studios of top local artists and galleries.

This free, self guided driving tour allows access to the private workspace of area painters, sculptors, and artists who create in mediums including metalsmith, ceramics, photography, stonework, glassblowing, collage, printmaking, mixed media, drawing and even furniture design. You will see the inner workings of the environment in which they create their pieces, and gain a sense of their external inspirations. Looking around a private studio and seeing the works in progress, the view from a window, the well used tools, maybe a muse or a beloved pet, can add depth to a piece that one could not acquire from a typical gallery showing.

For the art coinsurer, this is a rare treat... for the collector, it is the Motherlode. Many pieces will be available for purchase without the added cost of a middleman, taxes, shipping or even a fixed price. If you see a piece that speaks to you, talk with the artist and agree on a price that suits the needs of both the creator and the beholder. You may find a treasure that brings many years of beauty to your home, or the perfect gift for someone you love. Plus, you will always have a story to share with others and remember fondly as you enjoy your  new work of art for years to come.

This exciting and engaging tour lasts one weekend only so be sure to check out the map below as you navigate the landscape of Midlands artists. More information can be found at the Open Studios website, and if you happen upon an artist with only one ear, buy something. Trust me.
