COLUMBIA, S.C.(WACH)-As the warm summer months get closer safety officials are urging the public to be careful on Midlands’rivers.
The Columbia-Richland Fire Department’s swift water rescue team spends countless hours every year training for possible accidents on the water.
“This is a very tricky river,” said Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins. “Some people think that they know it but they really don't we do have to come and rescue people at times.”
The group works together to practice real-world situations that will help them save lives.
Special Operations Chief Jason Krusen says the training gives the crew a chance to learn from each other.
“It's a good opportunity for everyone to come out and train together,” said Krusen.
Although, the fire squad is equipped to save the day, it is still important to practice good safety measures while on the water so they don’t have to.
The Columbia-Richland Fire Department gives the following river safety tips:
-Learn to swim.
-Never swim or boat alone.
-Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return, and where to call if you don’t’.
-Wear a properly-fitted life jacket at all times when you are in or near the river.
-Take a cell phone in case of emergency.
-Carry a first-aid kit.
