COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A Lancaster County fire chief who died of a heart attack after helping put out a blaze is among firefighters being honored at a ceremony in Columbia.

The Rock Hill Herald reports that Chief Dennis Cauthen is being remembered Tuesday at the South Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

The 54-year-old fire chief died last year shortly after returning to the Elgin fire station that he led for more than a decade. Authorities said Cauthen complained of heartburn and stomach pains while at the fire.

Cauthen had been a volunteer firefighter for more than 30 years.
