COLUMIBIA (WACH) -- The Forest Acres Police Department is warning residents about scam targeting the elderly. Police say scammers are calling seniors telling them their grandchild is in jail overseas and needs bail money.
Detectives say they’re getting at least a couple of calls a month about this type of scam and believe many more attempts go unreported. They say older people who are swindled could end up losing thousands of dollars, that's why it's important younger family members keep an eye on their finances.
“We strongly encourage people to contact your son or your daughter or whoever the case may because it is possible your son or grandson is overseas; it's possible, but probably highly unlikely. Find out, don't just send money because you want to help out your loved one,” said Lt. B.W. Hinson with the Forest Acres Police Department.
Lt. Hinson says if you've had an elderly relative taken advantage of by this scam, he can offer advice on how to properly handle these types of crimes. You can contact Hinson at the department by 803-920-1835.
