COLUMBIA (WACH/AP) -- A University of South Carolina psychology professor who studies autism is trying to raise awareness about the disorder.

April is national Autism Awareness Month.

Jane Roberts is speaking Wednesday to share information about the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders and invite college students to learn about the need for therapists.

The therapists work with autistic children to build their social, speech and physical skills through play and other kinds of interaction.

Roberts is working with the South Carolina Autism Society and the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs to bring attention to the issue.
