CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Explosive teams are at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where a shell from the Civil War was found in a flower bed.

Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said the round was found in the horseshoe area of campus on Monday and the area has been closed to traffic and pedestrians.

Explosives teams from both the city and the Air Force were called to the scene and Air Force personnel were to take the ordnance away.

Uncovering Civil War shells in Charleston is not unusual. During the war, the city was besieged by Union gunners for 567 days. Charleston has been bombarded more than any other city in the Western Hemisphere.
