NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- North Charleston police say an officer has shot and wounded a 17-year-old suspect who pointed a gun at the officer.

Police say the officer has been placed on administrative leave while Sunday afternoon's shooting is investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division.

The department did not release the names of the officer or the teen, who was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston in serious condition.

Investigators recovered a 9 mm gun at the scene.

Police spokesman Spencer Pryor says officers were called to a neighborhood after witnesses said shots had been fired.

Police say an officer got out of a patrol car and tried to question a person, who pointed a gun at the officer. The officer then fired, wounding the suspect.
