CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- Former state Rep. Thad Viers has been indicted on stalking and harassment charges.

The indictments came Thursday, a day after the Myrtle Beach Republican resigned, saying he needed to concentrate on defending himself against what he called politically motivated charges.

Authorities say Viers called, texted, emailed and showed up at his ex-girlfriend's home for more than five months after they broke up, and did not stop after he was contacted by police.

Stalking is a felony, and carries a sentence of up to five years in prison. First-degree harassment is a misdemeanor that carries up to three years behind bars.

Four years ago, Viers pleaded no contest to threatening to beat and sexually assault a man dating his estranged wife. He paid a $500 fine for unlawful communication.
