COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - A local motorcycle club will ride across Columbia Saturday morning to raise money for charity.
This is the fourth year that the Dirty South Ryders Motorcycle Club of S.C., Inc. has hosted the "Cancer Awareness, Make a Difference" motorcycle ride.
The club plans to give 100 percent of the proceeds from the event to the South Carolina Oncology Associates Cares Foundation.
"We decided to adopt the SCOA as our primary charity for the fact that several of the motorcycle club members have battled different cancers. Some do not have insurance and they can't get care," said Desi Corley, President of the Dirty South Ryders Motorcycle Club.
Candy Coey, Event Coordinator for SCOA, says that over the past 3 years this drive has raised between $800 and $1000 each year.
"These groups are our lifesavers. Their giving is so important to the work we do," said Coey.
The SCOA Cares Foundation's mission is to raise funds and accept gifts for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. Specifically it will support cancer research, provide patient support services and offer community cancer educational classes and workshops for the citizens of Columbia, South Carolina and its surrounding communities.
Bikers from clubs across the Midlands as well as clubs from other states will join the ride.
The ride is scheduled to begin at noon at the Holiday Inn Express on Garners Ferry Road in columbia.
The Columbia Police Department will escort the motorcyclist to their final destination, the SCOA office building on Stoneridge Drive in Columbia.
After a presentation, the ride will head back to the Holiday Inn Express where the Dirty South Ryders will host a free cookout.
