COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)-- Columbia firefighters are battling a very large mulch fire in a wooded area on West Shady Grove Road, near the Ballentine area.

Columbia-Richland Fire Department spokesman Brick Lewis says the fire is producing heavy smoke that could cause possible driving hazards and potential breathing issues for those with respiratory problems who live near the area.

No homes were in any danger and fire officials did not plan on evacuating the area.

As of midnight, crews were on the scene using tractors to try to put down the fire on the 1.5 acre area.  They expect to be on the scene for most of the night.

Sheriff's deputies have a portion of West Shady Grove Road blocked off while firefighters work to get the situation under control.
