LEXINGTON, S.C. (WACH) - An illegal immigrant has been arrested after assaulting two men with a machete on separate occasions.
Jose Hernandez Mendez, 26, turned himself into investigators with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department Wednesday on arrest warrants on various charges of assault and battery.
The warrants allege that On Sept. 20, 2008, Mendez allegedly hit Donnie Moore several times on the back with the flat side of a machete at a home in Gaston. Also, on May 5, 2009, Mendez used a machete to cut Victor Gomez-Alvarez on the head and left hand at Gomez-Alvarez's home in Lexington.
According to Sheriff James Metts, Mendez assaulted Gomez-Alvarez with the intent to cause great bodily harm.
"Specially trained correctional officers at the Lexington County Detention Center who enforce federal immigration laws at the facility under the supervision of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) determined that Mendez illegally entered the United States from Mexico," said Metts.
The department reports that of the 819 illegal immigrants who were taken into ICE custody and placed into removal proceedings, 589 have been removed from the United States.
Mendez is currently held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
