COLUMBIA, SC -- Third Graders in all Richland One District schools will have special guests in class Thursday.
Columbia leaders and the school district will host its fourth annual "Together We Can Read" initiative in the morning.
A press conference was held at the Columbia Museum of Art Wednesday and announced that over 150 government agency officials and local celebrities from radio, television, and other companies will be visiting children and will read to them.
This years book is "All Around Town" by USC Professor Dinah Johnson, showcases photos in 1929 by Columbia native Richard Roberts. The book offers a window to the African-American community in the early parts of the century.
Superintendent Percy Mack said it is a valuable experience for readers as well as students.
"I don't know if you know what a difference it makes in the life of a child, for someone to come in that classroom other then their teacher, to read and spend time with them. They will ask you questions more than just about this book."
The event has been a big success the previous three years; promoting literacy and joy in reading for students and giving back to the community for readers.
