COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WACH) -- A West Columbia lawmaker held his annual party to honor local students who are doing well in school.

State Sen. Jake Knotts hosted a roller skate party Saturday for 23 elementary schools in Lexington County, and around 700 students attended.

Knotts has been sponsoring the party for 18 years.

Students who make academic honor roll for nine weeks get a personal invitation from the Republican.

"You cannot imagine the way it makes these kids feel, thanking me and hugging my neck. I've got kids that have been here five times, that means every year that they have made the honor roll," said Knotts.

Knotts coordinated skate races and gave out prizes and refreshments.

The party was at Three Fountains Skating Rink in Lexington County.
