COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP, WACH) -- Rain is moving through South Carolina and the state forestry commission has lifted a red flag fire alert that had been in effect since last weekend.

The alert lifted Tuesday had advised landowners to hold off on any outside burning. It had been posted Friday night.

The alert warned of dry conditions and brisk winds and encompassed the Pee Dee and coastal areas including more than half the counties in the state. The commission reported more than 120 wildfires statewide during the alert.

While conditions have improved with rains and higher humidity, the commission is reminding residents that the state is still in the late-winter, early-spring forest fire season.

If conditions deteriorate again, the Forestry Commission will issue another Red Flag Fire Alert for those areas at risk for elevated wildfire activity.
