Sumter, S.C. (WACH) - Phil Leventis will not seek an 8th term in the State Senate.

The 66-year-old Democrat has represented Sumter and Lee counties in the senate since 1981, when the Democratic Party dominated the General Assembly.

Leventis says he spoke with his wife before making the decision.  He would have faced a challenge from Republican Tony Barwick, who announced last month he will challenge Leventis for his seat this fall.

Leventis, a retired fighter pilot, said he will continue to encourage more civility in public discourse.
