COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is signing a bill that sets up the office of the state inspector general to investigate allegations of fraud, waste and abuse in state government.

Haley is set to sign the bill into law Thursday morning. Haley appointed Jim Martin as the state's second inspector general last June.

The law puts his duties and authority into state law.

Haley created the post by executive order last March, allowing her new inspector general and staff to do the same kind of work legislators can request through the state Legislative Audit Council.

The first inspector general, George Schroeder, left seven weeks later amid concerns about the operation's independence.

Under the law, evidence collected by the inspector general will be given to the state attorney general.
