COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH/AP) -- David Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency spoke in Columbia.

He talked about his time spent in the Middle-East  fighting the war on terror.

Petraeus is widely credited with rescuing a failing U.S. war in Iraq, soaring to public acclaim in 2007-08 with his surprising success in reversing an escalation of insurgent violence in Iraq.

Petraeus was sworn in last September as the 20th director of the CIA.

The former four-star general retired from the Army a week earlier after 37 years.

He is speaking at an annual awards presentation sponsored by Furman's Riley Institute.

The awards for excellence in legislative and civic leadership are named after former state House Speaker David Wilkins.
