COLUMBIA (WACH) - A man accused of fatally shooting another man in Washington, DC 19 years ago has been captured.
According to the US Marshals Service, Lamont Deshaw Terry was arrested Friday, Jan. 20 by Operation Intercept (OPIN), the US Marshals fugitive apprehension task force.
Terry allegedly shot and killed Chet Hunter Matthews on May 26, 1992 in East Potomac Park, Haines Point area of Washington, DC.
OPIN developed information that lead them to Columbia, and Terry was arrested without incident.
Terry was transported to the Matthew J. Perry Federal Courthouse where he received no bond and awaits further court proceedings.
A police affidavit says two accomplices to the killing who have already pleaded guilty for their roles and have agreed to cooperate identified Terry as the triggerman.
“Terry will remain in custody until he is extradited to Washington, DC. This arrest shows the dedication and perseverance of all agencies involved over the last 19 years to bring this suspect to justice. The family of Chet Matthews may now have closure knowing the alleged suspect will be returned to the District of Columbia to face the judicial system," said Kelvin Washington, US Marshal for the District of South Carolina.
Court records show Terry appeared Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court and is being held without bond. A woman who answered the phone at a listing for Terry hung up on a reporter.
A lawyer for Terry did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
