HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Business and political leaders are concerned about a proposal to build a hotel and casino east of Hardeeville near I-95 just above the South Carolina-Georgia state line.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the state's first casino would be owned by Cherokee Indians and would create more than 2,200 jobs.

Jim Wescott of the Lowcountry & Resort Islands Tourism Commission has mixed feelings, saying businesses that locate round casinos aren't always wholesome. But Jasper County Administrator Andrew Fulghum said the county can prevent places selling alcohol or sexually oriented businesses from locating nearby.

Gov. Nikki Haley is opposed to the casino. Her spokesman Rob Godfrey says Haley is working hard to bring in jobs to South Carolina but there's a better way than a casino.
