COLUMBIA (WACH/AP) -- South Carolina GOP leaders are scheduled to hold a news conference to discuss the U.S. Justice Department's challenge to the state's new voter ID law.

The Justice Department refused to clear the new law that requires people to show a state or federal photo identification when they vote in person.

Gov. Nikki Haley, Attorney General Alan Wilson, House Speaker Bobby Harrell and legislators will discuss the law at a news conference on Tuesday, minutes before the Legislature begins work for the year.

Supporters say the measure was needed to prevent fraud. But opponents said it would cause problems for people who have voted for years and don't have a state-issued driver's license or ID, military identification or U.S. passport.

On Sept. 28, 2011 Department of Motor Vehicle officials transported people who needed photo identification cards.

State records show nearly 217,000 active voters lack state photo IDs.
