Quake shakes Low Country

An earthquake, measuring 2.6, was reported in Summerville Wednesday morning.

SUMMERVILLE (WACH/AP)—An earthquake was reported near Summerville, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.  With a magnitude of 2.6, the earthquake was recorded at approximately 3:00 a.m. about 3 miles south of Summerville. 

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was about 3 miles below the surface, and was the third small quake in the same area in the last month.  The other 2 earthquakes were on New Year’s Day and December 21.

A quake in the same area that measured 7.3 killed 100 people in Charleston in 1886.
