COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It’s out with the old and in with the new for some families across the Midlands.

Christmas time typically brings in new furniture, new goodies, and newer household items.

It’s a time when families start cleaning for the new year and plenty of your old junk could be a godsend for someone in need.

“Folks always have lots of items that they are looking for a good home and some good use for them and Goodwill certainly puts it to use,” says David Hessberger, Regional Manager Goodwill.

David Hessberger is the Regional Manager of Goodwill.

He says during the holidays they experience a "blitz" where plenty of donations are pouring in thanks to people who are not throwing away old used items.

Hessberger says these old donations are also putting people to work.

“Our Goodwill has grown and been able to grow its mission services of putting people to work and helping with job search services. So it’s a great relationship,” says Hessberger.

Chris Petersen is the owner of 1-800-GOT-JUNK.

He says you can bank on your old items as well

“Craigslist is a popular thing put an item on Craigslist and it might have another life with somebody else,” says Petersen.

Back at Goodwill if you decide to donate you can count on getting some money back from Uncle Sam.

“We have tax receipts. If in fact they are going to itemize on this years tax returns they have that availability,” says Hessberger.

So before you throw away your old stuff remember one mans trash it another mans treasure.
