SPARTANBURG (WACH) – Spartanburg County deputies were involved in a shooting incident on Saturday, which landed a man in the hospital, after they were called to check on him in his Inman home.
According Spartanburg County Sherrif’s Office Lt. Tony Ivey, the man left a note with a relative indicating that he wanted to end his life on Saturday. The relative called the Sheriff’s Department, who responded to the man’s residence on Linderman Drive in Inman. When deputies arrived, they found the door locked, and got no response at the door. Based on the note, they feared the man had harmed himself, so they broke the door down, said Lt. Ivey.
Website GoUpstate.com reports that after entering the home, deputies were shot at, at which point, they returned fire, striking the man, who was taken to the hospital. The condition and the name of the man involved in the incident as not been released.
Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright said the deputies involved have been reassigned until SLED completes it’s investigation, which is standard in any officer involved shooting.
UPDATE: The man shot by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office faces 4 counts of attempted murder related to the incident. Lt. Ivey says that 63 year-old James Hugh Workman is currently at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once able to leave the hospital, Workman will be served warrants and face the charges.
