COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki says her office is updating a decades-old policy on what records must be kept and what can be destroyed following criticism about deleted e-mails.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the governor's office is working with the state Department of Archives and History to create a new record retention policy for the state's chief executive. It's expected to be released in January.

Haley has drawn fire after open records requests from media outlets raised questions about her office's deletion of e-mails.

Godfrey says Haley's office adopted the same policy of previous administrations.

The policy on what her office must retain is believed to be a leftover from 1974, which predates e-mails and other technology and can be open to interpretation.
