COLUMBIA (WACH) – Columbia city council members held off on deciding whether to approve the controversial sale of the land that Capital City Stadium sits on along Assembly Street in Downtown at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Members say they need more time to get all the facts to make a well informed decision.
Atlanta-based developer Bright-Meyers wants to use the land to develop a retail center, which would include a Walmart store.

Hundreds of residents, business owners and community leaders attended a pubic hearing Monday night to voice their opinions on the issue. Those against the sale say a Walmart in that area would detract from their quality in life. Those for it, say it would give Columbia an economic boost by creating hundreds of new jobs.

Council members directed city staff to come back with several answers to questions they have next month. Staff will present the information to council members at one their two meetings in January.
