GREENVILLE (WACH/AP) -- State officials have fined Liberty Denim more than $3,200 for the death of a worker earlier this year.

The Greenville News reported the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration office has issued two citations against the company.

Forty-one-year-old Lewis Edward Smith II died Aug. 31 when he fell into a machine and died at the textile plant.

Liberty Denim human resources director Sandy Owens says the company will play the fine and does not plan to appeal. Owens says the company has corrected the problems inspectors found.

Investigators say Smith and his supervisor had discussed a possible problem with a machine. When the supervisor returned 15 minutes later, Smith was in the machine.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said Smith's cause of death was positional asphyxiation.
