SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Spartanburg County officials have announced they are negotiating with Amazon to open a plant that would employ almost 400 people.

County council officials named Amazon shortly before a public hearing Monday afternoon on the project, which is expected to be a $50 million investment by the distributor.

Amazon began operations at a larger facility in Cayce earlier this year. That distribution center is expected to create 2,000 jobs by the end of 2013 in order to qualify for a state sales tax exemption.

Officials say an agreement on economic incentives could be completed in the next few days. Details on the incentives are expected to be made public after final approval.

Amazon has not commented on the possibility of a Spartanburg facility.
