CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina lawmaker wants to increase the number of veterans who'd be eligible for disabled parking privileges.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that Rep. Wendell Gilliard says he'll propose legislation ahead of the January session to allow veterans with less severe disabilities to obtain the special license plates.
The Charleston Democrat's bill would remove the current requirement that a veteran be totally and permanently disabled. It would allow veterans considered 70 percent disabled to get the tag.
Gilliard, who has a son serving in Afghanistan and another in the reserves, says the idea was suggested to him by an instructor at The Citadel who works with disabled veterans.
The proposal would not add another tag to the states 370 specialty license plates.
