COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina has suspended two fraternities, although the school isn't saying much more than that.

The State newspaper reports the university suspended one fraternity on Oct. 31 and the other on Nov. 4. The suspensions are unrelated.

University officials won't say which fraternities have been suspended or give details about what led to the decisions.

Officials would only say that one incident involves an alleged violation of new member activities, and the other involves a charge of violating the student code of conduct.

Jerry Brewer, associate vice president for student affairs, says the fraternities will be barred from carrying out chapter activities while the allegations are investigated.

In August, USC suspended rush activities for all fraternities over underage and excessive drinking. That ban was later lifted.
