More than 500 attending SC education summit

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- More than 500 educators, business leaders and legislators from across South Carolina are gathering in Columbia to discuss how schools can compete globally.

The day-long conference organized by the state Association of School Administrators starts Thursday.

The event is titled "South Carolina Education Connect: Competing in a Global Society."

School superintendents are unveiling a new Web site they hope will start conversations on building local support for public education.

Panelists for a discussion on education challenges include AT&T South Carolina president Pamela Lackey, Michelin North America chairman Dick Wilkerson, and Milliken's Southeast sales manager Mike Patrick.

Panelists for a discussion on opportunities include Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman, former Gov. Richard Riley and Boeing senior vice president Tim Keating.
