COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- About 400,000 fish are being released into the Edisto River.

The state Department of Natural Resources says it will release redbreast sunfish Wednesday into the river at a boat landing in Dorchester County near Givhans Ferry State Park.

The agency says the release is the first installment of many during November. They're being done in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Their goal is a total of 1.4 million redbreast in the Edisto River. The fish being stocked come from the state agency's freshwater fish hatchery program.

The stocking program is funded by fishing license fees and taxes on fishing and boating equipment.
