KERSHAW COUNTY (WACH) -- A Midlands police officer is behind bars after investigators say he had a sexual encounter with a child under 11-years of age.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Department arrested Fairfax officer 36-year-old Nakia Karrien Johnson Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says the mother of the young girl called officials after Johnson accidentally dialed her on his cell phone.  When she answered, the victim's mother says she heard a conversation between Johnson and her daughter describing the sexual encounter as it was taking place.

The mother then called the number back and demanded Johnson bring her daughter back home.

After further investigation, the victim says Johnson had been sexually abusing her for several years.

“Criminal sexual conduct against children are in themselves very disturbing crimes," Matthews says.  "The fact that a police officer, someone who is charged with protecting and serving the public, makes this crime even more disturbing.  I don’t believe in coincidences or luck, but this criminal activity would have gone on and on if Johnson had not accidentally dialed the victim’s mother who was able to hear what was going on.”

Johnson was a former deputy with the Kershaw and Lee County sheriff departments.  He is currently being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Fairfax Police Chief Marvin Williams tells WACH Fox News Johnson is currently employed with his department, but he is working to find out more details of the incident.
