CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- A committee of the Clemson University faculty senate is reviewing student lab fees.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported that a list of fees for the current year ranges from $75 to $200 for various classes. The school charges fees for nearly 2,600 different courses.

The school estimates that students pay an average of $400 in lab fees each year. Students also pay fees for transportation, the medical clinic, technology, the library, activities and campus recreation.

History professor Alan Grubb says it appears some classes have "phantom labs," where there is no laboratory session of a course.

Vice provost Debbie Jackson says such phantom labs are being addressed. Jackson says the university's curriculum committee is working to make sure course descriptions are clear on what lab fees cover.
