COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Several areas have banned the sale of bath salts and now, state health officials are about to up the ante.

Bath salts are a synthetic drug said to give users a “high” like cocaine or meth, and some argue they are far more dangerous than the real drugs.

The South Carolina Radio Network reports the Department of Health and Environmental Control board is set to meet Thursday to add bath salts to the list of Schedule 1 drugs. If given that listing, the sale of bath salts will be banned in the state.

Last week, a measure banning the sale, possession or purchase of bath salts went into effect in the City of Columbia.

Violating that ban could earn 30 days in jail or a $500 fine.
