COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Columbia-Richland Fire Department launched new "Adopt-A-Fire Station" program Monday morning.
According to Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins, the Adopt-A-Fire Station initiative was developed after neighborhoods expressed interest in donating items to the Fire Department.
To kick-off the program, Home Depot on Harbison Boulevard donated appliances, materials and volunteers to Station #3 Industrial Park off of Bluff Road.
The station received fresh paint, a new refrigerator, microwave, and a bricked patio area.
"A lot of people don't realize that we are here for 24hrs a day," said Deputy William Cox, "this is a God send for us."
Jenkins say the program will help build key relationships between firefighters and the communities they serve.
"We want to make sure that the community knows that this is not only the home of the firefighters but this is place that services them and provides a very unique and a very important service to the community," said Jenkins.
Columbia's Bear Creek station will also receive renovations on Thursday from Home Depot.
