COLUMBIA (WACH)-- Veterans and military supporters are being recognized for their service and work with the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross hosted a Clara Barton recognition ceremony Wednesday night to honor the armed forces.

Longtime Red Cross supporter and retired Colonel Kevin Shwedo presented personalized military challenge coins to those being recognized.

Veteran Ramon Guitard, one of the honorees, was the guest speaker at the event. After losing both his legs in Iraq, he was inspired to give back to the Red Cross for all the support he received from the organization.

“Giving back is my soul. It’s deep down. Treat others as you want them to treat you,” says Guitard.

The other honorees include Bill Dukes with Honor Flight, former Marine and longtime Senator John Courson, and Major General Robert Livingston, who serves as head of the Military Department in South Carolina.
