MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- There's another candidate running for Congress in South Carolina's new 7th Congressional District in the northeastern corner of the state.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that Democrat Parnell Diggs, a former president of the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina, has entered the race.

Diggs was born blind and says he's running because he's worried what kind of country will be left behind for people like his 11-year-old son Jordan.

The only other candidate in the race is Republican Rep. Thad Viers of Myrtle Beach.

The new district was created because the state gained population in last year's census. The district lines still must be approved by the U.S. Justice Department.
