COWPENS, S.C. (WHNS, AP) -- Authorities say a Cowpens man told Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies that he fired a gun inside his home and thought there was a dead person in the back room after eating bath salts and drinking.

Patrick Powell, 31, is charged with two counts of attempted murder, and the use of a firearm while under the influence.

Deputies said they arrived at the man's house on Seagle Road in Cowpens around 5 a.m. Sunday to find him shooting out of the windows and claiming that someone tried to break into the house, and that there was a body inside.

Deputies said Powell told them he took bath salts, valium and a lot of alcohol. Bath salts contain drugs that cause users to get high, but also can cause hallucinations and paranoia.

Powell says he was afraid because someone tried to break in his home and there was a body inside. Officers found no body and no one else in the home.

It wasn't clear if Powell had a lawyer. As of Sunday night Powell was still behind bars on $40,000 dollars bond.
