COLUMBIA (WACH) -- There’s a new substation for the Columbia Police Department and no doubt when you're filling up your tank along Devine Street you may just see it.

Owner Robert Brandi of the Pitt Stop gas station has offered space to the Columbia Police Department.

Officials say the owner approached Chief Randy Scott about the idea because the owner likes community policing and having more police presence.

The substation will be used primarily for the Columbia Police Department Hospitality Unit putting them closer to areas likes Five Points.

The move would save plenty of money because taxpayers are not footing the bill for the move.

“This is a donation if you will, courtesy of Robert Brandi. So we don’t have to pay for utilities, we don’t pay for the office space, it’s all free," says Jennifer Timmons, CPD, Public Information Officer.

The owner has also partnered with other law enforcement agencies across the Midlands so that they too can establish more substations.
