22 cell phones and 13 one pound packages of tobacco among significant amount of contraband seized.
KERSHAW COUNTY (WACH) -- Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says his deputies have done it again. Sheriff Matthews says while conducting a traffic stop, deputies seized a significant amount of contraband headed to the South Carolina Department of Corrections facility in Columbia. Matthews says this is the second time the department’s traffic unit has made a discovery like this since beginning operations.
Kershaw deputies stopped a car carrying five men for excessive speeding on Interstate 20. During the stop, officials say they found 22 cell phones with chargers and 13 one pound packages of tobacco with cigarette lighters.
Sheriff Matthews says all of the items were packaged in way that would allow them to be thrown over a prison fence. The items will be turned over to investigators with the state Department of Corrections.
So far, the driver of the vehicle is charged with speeding and one of the passengers is charged being a minor in possession of alcohol.
