COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- Columbia police say they wrote 31 citations for underage drinking at an off-campus house party for the 21st birthday of one of its residents.
The State newspaper reported Thursday that police busted the party at a home rented by a Delta Delta Delta sorority member.
The police report doesn't say whether the 31 were University of South Carolina students. The newspaper reports they include the 20-year-old treasurer of USC's Delta Delta Delta chapter.
USC vice president Jerry Brewer says action against the chapter depends on whether it was an official sorority event.
USC suspended the new member process for fraternities last month. Seven fraternities were accused of providing alcohol to underage recruits during rush parties. Fraternities in good standing invited new members to join a week later.
Columbia attorney Todd Kincannon confirmed at least one fraternity retained his services to file a potential lawsuit.
WACH FOX News obtained a copy of a letter sent by Kincannon to USC President Harris Pastides. The letter called on USC to fire Brewer along with Director of Student Services Anna Edwards on the grounds that the order to halt fraternity rush allegedly violated the students' constitutional rights. The letter also claimed their comments slandered students not accused of any wrongdoing.
In light of USC's actions against fraternities with alcohol violations, do you think anything should be done to USC's sororities after this incident? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
