ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina State University's president is joining several education officials on a trip to Tanzania as part of President Obama's initiative to expand academic opportunities for students in Africa.

George Cooper says he hopes this week's trip will expand opportunities for the Orangeburg school to collaborate with schools in east Africa.

Cooper will join representatives of the Textbooks and Learning Materials Program. The group was created in 2002 to work with governments in Africa to try to improve educational opportunities in six sub-Saharan countries. The group works for better training for teachers and more education supplies for students.
